In 2019, Luxury Frontiers had the privilege to begin the architectural and interior design for Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort. With its doors officially opened as of December 1st, we are pleased to share just a few of the insights and design details behind the innovative nature retreat and Four Seasons' entry into luxury lodges and tented camps in the Americas.
Featuring 15 luxury tents nestled amid 48 forested acres (19 hectares) on a private peninsula overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Naviva celebrates the intrinsic bond that humans have with nature through biophilic design.
Arriving at Naviva, a transformative journey
Embodying the biophilic design approach and key attributes of biomimicry seen throughout the property, the welcome experience at Naviva starts by crossing over a dramatic jungle ravine via a timber bridge– a tunnel-like walkway enveloped by a lattice bamboo weave, emulating the form of the caterpillar crawling into its curved, copper shingle cocoon and symbolizing the transition from a guest's everyday life to Naviva.
Luxury tents like no other
Each tented accommodation offers a fully immersive outdoor experience with open-air living rooms and separate bedrooms flowing to expansive decks and private plunge pools. Luxury Frontiers had the opportunity to create a more traditional tent experience by converting the living areas into indoor-outdoor spaces, with the use of canvas roll ups instead of walls for guests to more fully enjoy the jungle surrounds. From the outside, the light, wing-like canvas membrane atop the accommodation unit is grounded by the monolithic gravitas of the bathroom tower. Inside, our team brought in natural light through a sky-lit oculus specifically designed for the shower while a luxurious bath enjoys uninterrupted ocean views. A bamboo-enclosed outdoor shower was also designed to further the nature-centric bathing experience
Indoor-outdoor living throughout
Copal Cocina, the resort's central gathering, dining, and recreational space, welcomes guests through an entrance cocoon, celebrating bamboo construction by creating an intricate bamboo 'hive'. The heart of Naviva, Copal Cocina was designed to provide the comfort of home and serve as a community space for guests to play foosball, enjoy a meal at the rammed concrete counter of the open-air kitchen, or read a book in eclectic lounge areas exuding character and personality. Beyond the resort’s public spaces and accommodation offerings, the design extends to the experiences, amenities, and guest programming available on-site such as access to intimate spa pods, a traditional Mexican temazcal or “house of heat,” an outdoor gym, and a serene jungle oasis at the Alma Pool. From arrival to departure, the resort experience places a strong emphasis on indoor and outdoor living, providing a distinct narrative that focuses on nature, place, and culture, all while endorsing the highest level of luxury.
