One of our core beliefs is the power of conscious design—design that elevates the guest experience while promoting sustainability and community development. Our recent outreach efforts at Babanango Game Reserve through our work at Madwaleni River Lodge demonstrate our commitment to these values.
A COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY IN DESIGN
Madwaleni River Lodge is a luxury safari lodge in the heart of Zululand in KZN, where the majority of the land (74%) is owned by three community trusts (Emcakwini, Esibongweni, and KwaNgono). During the design process, our aim was to adopt sustainable practices to support our and Babanango’s commitment to conservation and reducing our environmental impact.
We specified bamboo decking and flooring throughout the lodge, recognising it as a sustainable, net-zero carbon product. In partnership with Moso, a leader in sustainable bamboo products, we made a sizable donation to the African Habitat Conservancy Foundation (AHCF). AHCF plays a crucial role in conservation and community support around the Babanango Game Reserve, ensuring our efforts contribute to their broader environmental and community care goals.
SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH CONSCIOUS DESIGN AND SKILL DEVELOPMENT
In alignment with Babanango Game Reserve’s rehabilitation initiatives, we actively participated in removing invasive alien plant species, such as black wattle. For our design of Madweleni River Lodge’s boma, we decided to use the extracted wattle and the local community’s skills to create an innovative design.
Local artisans were commissioned to weave the wattle saplings into a steel framework, a technique rooted in traditional Zulu basket weaving. The method preserves cultural identity and provides ongoing employment for the community as the woven walls are designed to decay over time, necessitating continual reweaving.
Our construction methodology at Madwaleni River Lodge was intended to minimise environmental impact and maximise community benefit. By prioritising manual labour over heavy machinery, we created numerous job opportunities and used the construction process as a tool for community upliftment. Fifty-five workers from fifteen nearby communities were employed, many of whom gained valuable skills and work experience that will benefit them long-term.
“When we design at Luxury Frontiers, we design with the community in mind. The building methodologies at Madwaleni needed to suit the community, so there would be no question but to use the community. It’s about designing to match local skill levels. It’s about creating conscious design.”

COMMISSIONING LOCAL ARTWORK
Incorporating local arts and crafts into the lodge's design was a deliberate choice to celebrate and sustain community traditions. We collaborated with Africa Ignite, a rural development agency, to commission local artisans for handmade decorative items.
These items, which include weaving, beadwork, woodwork, and pottery, adorn the lodge and tell a story of cultural preservation while providing income and skills training for the community.
A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO CONSERVATIONS AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT
Luxury Frontiers' work at Madwaleni River Lodge stands is an excellent example of how conscious design and strategic partnerships can drive conservation and community development.
Our efforts at Babanango Game Reserve illustrate that sustainability goes beyond environmental concerns—it encompasses cultural preservation, community empowerment, and economic resilience.
