The Sustainable Design of Belmond Savute Elephant Lodge

Located in Botswana’s glorious, wildlife-rich Chobe National Park, Belmond Savute Elephant Lodge is one of the crown jewels of the luxury brand’s portfolio of hotels. Now, after an extensive multimillion-dollar rebuild led by Luxury Frontiers, the renowned camp is back and better than ever. Not only did the ambitious redesign and refurbishment give the camp a more elevated and contemporary appearance— it also offers a dazzling array of eco-conscious features. Chief Design and Development Officer Graeme Labe cites an example, “Today, no new structures in the national park are allowed to have any concrete. So to meet current regulations, we stripped the property of all its concrete and replaced it with eco-friendly composite materials.”

The 12 air-conditioned tented suites are raised high on platforms and boast high-style interiors that were designed by Muza Lab and feature four-poster beds, leather and wood furnishings, and lavish bathrooms. But the centerpiece is arguably the stunning bamboo decks, equipped with outdoor showers and terraces with daybeds. And then there’s the 665-panel solar farm, which Luxury Frontiers conceived to reduce the burning of fossil fuels by approximately 90%. “We were one of the first companies in Botswana to install a Tesla battery system,” says Labe. “We’re quite proud of that.”

Nayara Tented Camp is a collection of luxury tented suites overlooking the Arenal Volcano.

Under Construction: Nayara Tented Camp

When it opens in Fall 2019, Nayara Tented Camp will bring Luxury Frontiers’ signature blend of low-impact, high-yield experiential design to Costa Rica’s lush Arenal Volcano National Park. The year-round resort— Luxury Frontiers’ first foray into the Americas— is an extension of the award-winning Nayara Resort Spa & Gardens and Nayara Springs (named one of CNN Travel’s top 16 most relaxing places in the world), and was commissioned by the owners to replicate the high-end tented camp experiences of Africa and Asia. The air-conditioned accommodations marry barefoot-luxe touches (think: outdoor showers, four-poster beds, and spacious bathrooms) with write-home-about design features, including private plunge pools fed by natural hot springs. And the innovation doesn’t stop there: 12 out of the 18 tents will be so-called “mirror-image” tents that can be linked together to create spectacular two-bedroom units perfect for families or larger groups.

As with other Luxury Frontiers projects, Nayara Tented Camp’s design will completely immerse guests in the natural environment and inspire them to embrace adventure, unlocking the destination in new and unexpected ways. Guests can hike the nearby volcano, go on a whitewater rafting or canyoning adventure, or explore Nayara’s own sloth sanctuary. In addition, guests of Nayara Tented Camp will be able to enjoy the camp’s pool and restaurant and will also have access to the full range of services, amenities, and facilities at the neighboring sister properties, both of which have consecutively been voted the best resort in Central and South America by Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast Traveler.

First Look: Jock Safari Lodge

The acclaimed Jock Safari Lodge, set in South Africa’s legendary Kruger National Park, recently unveiled a new look courtesy of Luxury Frontiers— and the positive reviews are already pouring in. “Wow,” writes one TripAdvisor reviewer about the extensive refurbishment to the property’s main lodge. “The room was pure luxury with an outdoor shower, bath, plunge pool, sun loungers, and sheltered daybed on a private deck overlooking the plains. As we were unpacking, a herd of elephants made their way past our room!” The new Arrival Tent is decorated in classic Hemingway style, and meant to evoke the property’s storied past, while the 12 rooms are a study in colonial-chic design— all gauzy mosquito netting, reed walls, tufted leather bedroom benches, and animal hide rugs. Outside, the comfort continues, with expansive decks kitted out with enclosed day salas, retiled plunge pools, outdoor Victorian Ball and Claw baths, and views of the serene riverbed. Two other noteworthy features: on cool nights, guests will now be able to warm up to the cozy fire put in the upstairs bar or in the now-heated communal pool. Feedback on the refurbishment has been so effusive that Luxury Frontiers has been commissioned to do a similarly ambitious overhaul to Fitzpatrick’s at Jock, the property’s more intimate three-suite lodge.

A Message from the CEO

Since our inception in 2011, it has been our mission to conceptualize, design, and develop highly experiential tents, tree houses, and similar products catering to the luxury segment of the global hospitality marketplace. We have been fortunate to have received mandates from some of world’s marquis hospitality brands to create one-of-a-kind, ultra-luxury tented products, particularly in Africa and more recently in the Americas.

Founder and CEO, Luca Franco.

It has always been our strategic intent to seamlessly transition our expertise to the Americas— which is why, earlier this year, we raised our first round of new equity from a group of high-net-worth investors. Since then, we have established a team in our world headquarters in the San Francisco Bay Area and added staff to our Johannesburg office, to maintain a strong presence in Africa.

Our newly redesigned website was launched last month and clearly articulates who we are and where we’re headed. The site— which you can explore here— is informative, easy-to-navigate, and full of beautiful imagery that will open your eyes to the breadth, scope, and possibilities of our luxury tented and treetop lodgings. Whether you’re an owner, operator, or other development partner, you’ll find information about our process, projects, and range of our services along with press clippings and pertinent industry news.

As we embark on this new chapter, I’d like to thank you for sharing our passion for sustainable and experiential hospitality. We believe in the capacity of travel to forge deep and meaningful connections that last a lifetime— and look forward to discussing with you all the ways Luxury Frontiers can usher your lodging project into the new age of luxury travel.

Travel well,
Luca
